IRISH RALLY 2010

Well what can I say other than Rickie
Whites rally was truly superb. I know rallies are not everyone’s cup of tea but
can only say you do not know what you are missing.Â

I went over via Dublin with Nick and
Amanda Hare on the HSS from Holyhead and thank them for allowing me to share
their B&B which was around six miles from the rally site at BallinamallardÂ
Football club, County Fermanagh. We took the new N3 motorway up through the
centre of Ireland which is excellent with hardly any traffic and only a small
two euro toll to pay. Rickie arranged some of the best weather for many a long
day and the site was excellent. Club members had full use of the catering
facilities etc and Rickie had laid on all day tea and coffee and we even
received a goodie bag from the local tourist dept run by biker Eddie McGovern. A
nice touch Rickie.

Alan Winter who has recently recovered
from serious illness was on hand to show us the beautiful trophies he had
designed made for the rally and also the ones he has made for the euro rally
which Amanda was taking back to Kent. They are made with various engine parts
Alan had lying about in his garage! See picture. Good to have you back Alan.
Rickie had laid on a sumptuous steak meal each night and the famous Ulster
breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Entertainment was laid on each
evening with a truly professional band on Saturday night. Nick and I managed to
win spanners and sets of screwdrivers in the raffle so we had every base
covered!

On Saturday we had a ride out to
Mullaghmore which was a round trip of just under one hundred and fifteen miles
which in the hot weather was just enough. Mullaghmore  is of course the small
fishing village where Lord Mountbatten was killed during the troubles in 1979.
At the start of the rideout Rickie had arranged for a police escort and further
police at junctions in Enniskillen so the just under thirty cbx’s could thunder
through the town. You should have seen the car drivers and pedestrians faces as
we passed through. Now I know how a king or queen must feel carrying everything
before them! Another nice touch Rickie. On the way back we stopped in a valley
the name of which I did not find out but nevertheless it was beautiful and green
with shear cliffs and a salmon and trout river running through.

It was great to meet so many of our
members from both Northern and Southern Ireland who have only been a voice on
the telephone or a name on an email.Great to meet you all.The concours awards
were as follows. Best Twin Shock, Michael McBride, Best Pro-link Colin
Stafford, Best Modified,Vince Noone, Best Special, John Currie. Best Paint,
Norman Witherley. I cannot finish without mentioning Gaynor Helsby who came over
with husband Graeme and their two dogs ho were in the sidecar of their superb
pro-link outfit. Gaynor managed to break an ankle in Stranraer before boarding
the ferry. She fell off a curb I believe but nevertheless after treatment at the
local hospital Gaynor still came on to the rally. True grit as I am sure many
would have given up and gone home. We felt it was only right to give Gaynor the
Best in Show award.

Well done to Rickie and his helpers and
thanks to you all for making it such an enjoyable event.Â

Mel Watkins

Death Valley 2010 CBX Rally

Death Valley 2010 CBX Rally

Suited up and threw a leg over the faithful steed, then hit the choke & starter button. The staccato rasp of a barely-muffled turbocharged Honda CBX filled

the cool morning air with its hair-raising sound as small animals and birds took flight and ran for cover. I snicked the undercut trans into 1st gear and slid

the clutch out to get underway for the 13th annual Death Valley CBX rally. I topped off with as much premium fuel as could be packed in the tank and headed

for the highway to air out the venerable turbo CBX's ample lungs and enjoy one of the more righteously fun rides we've all been doing out west here.

After cleaning out the cobwebs from the compressor housing, I settled the beast into a steady 75mph cruising speed and headed north through the urban sprawl

of L.A. and the San Fernando Valley, then out of town on State Rte. 14 north to the 1st planned refuel stop in beautiful downtown Mojave, CA. Once more

hi-octane(?) fuel was added to the thirsty steed's tank, luggage security was checked and I was on my way once again. Heading north on 14, I settled back and

listened to the CBX's music emanate from the single 3" dump tube from the turbine outlet and enjoyed the desert scenery and solitude.
Veering off the main highway on a slightly more northeasterly course on Randsburg-Redrock Road, I ran the bike up to a slightly higher cruising speed and

wicked the throttle a few times as the turbocharged six belted out its music. Several minutes later, the turnoff for the Garlock Rd. cutoff appeared and I

veered left and onto the road. Several wide flat-out sweepers met me and the seething six as we ate up asphalt(and fuel)at an alarming rate! All too soon,

US395 appeared at a stop sign, and I turned left onto the highway and went up to another turnoff known as Searles Station Cutoff Rd., swung right on this road

and cleared the railroad tracks at a reduced speed to keep the bottom of the bike intact. I proceeded to where the cutoff dumped me onto Trona Rd. and kept at

a speedy northeasterly pace and soon came to State Rte. 178 east of Ridgecrest, CA. Turning right onto the road, I accelerated briskly up to cruising speed

and followed it through the small canyon and some nice sweeper turns, and then turned with the road on a northerly direction past the borax plants and Searles

Dry Lake en route to fuel stop #2 for the ride.

Having had some cold water and a pit stop for the pilot as well as the bike, I got on the black turbo six and swung out into the highway going north out of

the bustling metropolis of Trona, CA. Once city limits were cleared, I turned up the wick slightly and went over the summit going out of town into the

Panamint Valley. After the twisty section going down the grade was cleared, the road straightened out after several excellent wide sweeper turns and I threw

some fire into the turbo unit, quickly accelerating up to an illegally fast cruising speed and just as quickly arriving at the intersection of Panamint Valley

Rd. and Wildrose Cyn. Road. A short inflight breather was taken with more cold water and some munchies, then out on Panamint Valley Rd. at a healthy clip to

State Rte. 190, the main west-east artery into Death Valley Nat'l Park.

I maneuvered the CBX onto the highway and very quickly accelerated around a motorhome and a couple of unsuspecting cars, then cranked up the throttle and let

the turbo spool up and fill the CBX's lungs with copious amounts of premium fuel up the grade and excellent twisties up to Towne Pass at 4900 ft., the last

bit of cool air before dropping down the narrow canyon and twisties where the road finally straightened out. I cranked on the throttle some more and cleared

some air on a few dips/rises in the otherwise straight highway and kept in it unitl it sputtered and ran out the main tank. I hit my reserve fuel and

proceeded a bit more cautiously into Stovepipe Wells, an out post at the west end of the park. Fuel was added with some modifiers to allow for regular fuel to

be run, and I grabbed some more cold water from the tank bag.

Upon refreshing myself and my faithful ride, I then set out for the 25 mile ride to the Furnace Creek Ranch Resort facility along a nicely paved road and

proceeded well below sea level according to the roadside signs posted along the way. I pulled into the facility, parked in the shade as high temps were

affecting the power output of the ride at this point, and got my room and proceeded down to where the whole crew let out a recognizing yell as I pulled into

the parking area, and they pressed a cold drink into my hand upon disembarkment from the turbo CBX.

This is what it's all about--good bikes, good friends, good food/drink, and most of all, good times!! Death Valley is one of our more fun runs and the most

relaxing in my opinion.

DV10 will be held April 23rd, 24th, 25th, & 26th, 2010--last date for group reservation is March 22nd, so get 'em in now!!

The CBX Book

Hi CBXers,

"The CBX Book" ... It is presently being written and well underway, and tentative completion is Fall-2009!

You can be part of it ... have your CBX appear in "the CBX Book!"

As this is the CBX's 30th Anniversary (1979-2009) I have decided to write a Book on the CBX-marque ... yes, I may be mad! The purpose of this non-profit-making Book is primarily to get people talking about the CBX, and to help elevate the CBX to its rightful 'mantel' in Motorcycling History! I will send a free copy to every Motorcycle Magazine around the World that I can find, the remaining 1,000 copies will be sold at cost to CBXers who want them. The production costs of the Book will be as low as they can be for Printing and Postage (as it is being self-Published and self-Funded by me!), but aims to be a high-quality hard-back full colour Publication.

I would like to request any interesting photos or information you may have. If you have a CBX, I would like to include it in the Book. This is not a 'Technical Document' but rather aims to cover every aspect of CBXing and CBXers around the World. I have chapters on ...

CBX History: do you have old photos of when you first bought the Bike new? Any photos from 1978 to 80s?

Brochures/Adverts: do you have the original Honda brochures and adverts ... I need French, German, Italian and Australian adverts. I now have Honda's permission to reuse these.

Specials: Moto Martin, Spondon, Egli, Dresda, Dunstall, Rau, AMC, etc. Have you any information about Special-frame builders ... or do you own a Special Framed CBX?

Personal Specials: Streetfighter CBX, Chopper CBX, Turbo CBX, etc

Racing CBXs: Drag Bikes, Circuit, Racing Side-cars, etc.

CBX-combo: trikes, and sidecars

CBXer's Bikes: whatever your CBX is like ... Concours or 'Rat-Bike' no problem, get it in the Book for CBXers Worldwide to see! There will be a Chapter introducing the CBX-Z, CBX-A, CBX-B, and CBX-C so if you want your CBX to be in print, let me have the photos (ideally you on, or beside your CBX). Give me your details in the photo title eg. "Ian Foster, Limavady, N.Ireland.jpeg"

Photos : as high-resolution as possible please (digital file size 1.0MB+).

If you have photos or information of interest please contact me at:
ian@netvigator.com
... or 'Snail mail' the information to:
- Ian Foster, 8 Cloghan Rd., Limavady, N.Ireland, BT49 0PJ, United Kingdom ... or,
- Ian Foster, 'Seasons Palace #75,' 157 Kam Sheung Road, Pat Heung, New Territories, Hong Kong.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Best Regards, IAN FOSTER (N.Ireland and Hong Kong)

BSA is Marque Of The Year for AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days 2009

BSA is Marque Of The Year for AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days 2009

One of Great Britain's most storied motorcycle companies, BSA, will be the Marque of the Year for AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days 2009, the world's largest gathering of vintage

motorcycle enthusiasts, set for July 24-26 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

"BSA's place in motorcycling history is impressive, with its well-known and well-raced BSA Gold Stars, Shooting Stars and more,'' said Tigra Tsujikawa, events coordinator for the

AMA. "We're glad to showcase the marque at this year's AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, and highlight the machines and people who made BSA famous."

Founded in the 1860s as the Birmingham Small Arms Co. to build weapons for the Crimean War, BSA branched out to motorcycles and was making machines entirely in-house by 1910.

Originally aimed at the utility and recreational market, the bikes became well-known to racers the world over after the factory entered a team in the Daytona 200 in 1954, and BSA

riders swept the top three places. Its Gold Star 500cc single, in particular, has become one of the most iconic bikes in all of motorcycling.

Not only will the weekend feature bike shows, vintage racing and North America's largest motorcycle swap meet, but a parade of classic motorcycles representing each year of the

AMA's 85 years will celebrate the heritage of American motorcycling. Also on tap: demo rides of current production bikes, motorcycling seminars, the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame

auction, stunt shows, the new product Manufacturers' Midway, club corrals featuring marque and regional clubs, and guided rides through the rolling Ohio countryside.

AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days benefits the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum. The goal of the Museum, located on the campus of the American Motorcyclist Association in Pickerington,

Ohio, is to tell the stories and preserve the history of motorcycling. For more information, call (614) 856-2222, or visit the Museum's website at www.motorcyclemuseum.org.

Canada. The location of the rally will be in Cumming, Georgia. We picked this
site for 3 reasons, Bill has some of the best riding places in the area, he has
offered to do it at his place and it is near Atlanta International airport.
There will be no problem getting you guys from the airport to the rally site
too. The rally site is about 20 minutes from one of the best places to ride
motorcycles in the USA. Bill will show us some of his favorite back roads that
he's found living in that area for most of his life. I personally have ridden
there many times and it is great riding.

We will ride in The northern Georgia Mountains, North Carolina mountains and to
name some places you might have heard of, the Dragons Tail, Cherohala Skyway,
129 scenic hwy, NC hwy 28, Bald Mountain, Blue Ridge Parkway and many more
unknown roads. Also Bills place is about 2 hours from Barbers Motorcycle Museum.
We arranged for our group to stay at the Comfort Suites of Cumming (phone #
770-889-4141) When you make reservations tell them it will be for the MOTORCYCLE
RALLY and they will give you the rate of $89.00 per night per room. There are 77
rooms at this hotel and if we need more there is another hotel next door. The
hotel has a pool as well as many other amenities. They say that they serve a
free, healthy breakfast.

The rally site will be at Bills house. He has about 5 acres and has hosted many
get together's there. The hotel is about a mile from his place. There are plenty
of restaurants within walking/riding distance from the hotel. On Friday and
Saturday night we will have catered dinners. As far as we know now, these will
be an all you can eat southern type BBQ and each night will be different food.
We will have a large tent set up with chairs during the rally dates. We want to
make this a riding rally and come back in the evenings to share our events at
Bills place. We are also going to be raffling off at least one CBX for this
event and we will have many CBX parts to raffle off as well. All proceeds from
the raffles and the rally will go to Toys for Tots. We are also working with
other clubs around the world and trying to get them to donate CBX T- shirts from
their clubs as well.

We
have not come up with a price yet for this rally, we think it will be around
$50.00 and this will include the catered food. We are also asking any CBX owners
who are coming to this rally and have extra bikes, to please bring what they can
so that our far away CBXers can use their bikes. You can get in touch with me at
usedcbxparts@hotmail.com. So far I
have about 17 extra bikes that others have loaned our overseas friends for this
event. We will need lots more. I will let you know ahead of time who needs your
bike and you and him/her can email each other. Just another way of knowing a
fellow CBXer. I also have set up a trucking company that will haul your bikes
from the west coast to this rally and wait there until the rally is over and
then bring your bikes back. He will do this for $650.00 round trip. I have used
Larry from B and B (phone # 209-495-3729) over the years with never a single
problem. He said he will do this if he gets a minimum of 25 bikes. He also said
he will still do it for the $650.00 if there is only 1 bike, but he will not
wait there at the rally site. He will just pick it up when he is going back.
Larry also said that he can have about 4 pick up places in CA to get all the
bikes. Larry has set aside the dates for this rally to do this for us. $650.00
is a very good price for round trip.

I am working with two companies in the
Atlanta area that rent bikes if you do not want to borrow someone else's. We are
trying to get a shipping company to ship all the owners bikes that want to
attend from the UK area as well. I will email the UK Riders club when I have all
that info. I have set up something for our Iceland friends to get their bikes
here as well. I think that most of them will borrow someone else's bike due to
the cost.

We have made arrangements for you to rent a bike if you choose to do so. This
will guarantee you will have a bike to ride for the rally due to the tremendous
response we have received for the rally.

A limited number of bikes are available so call early for
reservations! They will pick you up at the airport for NO CHARGE.

Visit Eaglerider.com for more information or You can call 404-675-2990 EST ask for JJ

Please make reservations as soon as possible as this will help us hold
the entire hotel and also help the caterer with a head count for food. We know
for a fact at this time that guys from Norway, Iceland, Australia, Canada, and
the UK are coming. For the guys in the USA, lets make this the best CBX rally
ever and show our fellow CBXers from other countries how a rally in the USA
works. I have personally been to a rally in the UK and Iceland and those guys
know how to have a heck of a great time. Good riding and great hospitality, it's
our turn to show them the same great time if not better! If you have any
questions please email me at

AMA concerned about new threat to motorcycle safety training funds

U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters is urging Congress to allow states to divert federal money now used for motorcycle training and awareness to instead promote the use of motorcycle helmets, the American Motorcyclist Association reports.

Peters sent letters to House and Senate leaders this week asking for the change.

Ed Moreland, AMA Vice President for Government Relations, expressed concern that diverting federal motorcycle safety funds to promote helmet use could harm rider training courses and motorcycle awareness programs that are already underfunded in many states.

"Helmet use is certainly one part of a comprehensive approach to motorcycle safety," said Moreland. "But this step is a direct raid on funds that were appropriated by Congress to address the specific safety concerns of the motorcyclists rights community. Furthermore, the use of motorcycle helmets is already advocated in existing motorcycle safety initiatives.

"Funding for rider-training courses is frequently under threat in cash-strapped states, and cutting the same-size pie into thinner slices is not the comprehensive, thoughtful, national motorcycle safety strategy we need."

Moreland also expressed concern that Peters proposal could contradict sections of transportation bills passed in 1998 and 2005 that ban the use of federal motorcycle safety funds to lobby state legislatures in favor of mandatory helmet laws and could effectively reverse those bans.

The AMA strongly advocates the voluntary use of helmets by adults, along with other appropriate safety gear, and does not oppose laws requiring helmet use by minors. But the Association believes adults should be allowed to make their own decisions about when to wear a helmet.

The American Motorcyclist Association: rights. riding. racing.
Founded in 1924, the AMA is a non-profit organization with 290,000 members. The Associations purpose is to pursue, protect and promote the interests of motorcyclists, while serving the needs of its members.
